1. Inconsistent Commands
If you say "sit" but your partner says "sit down", your dog gets confused. Everyone in the household should use the same cues.
2. Training for Too Long
Dogs have short attention spans. Multiple 5-minute sessions are more effective than one 30-minute session. End on a positive note before your dog loses focus.
3. Repeating Commands
Saying "sit, sit, SIT!" teaches your dog they don't need to respond to the first cue. Say it once, wait, then help them succeed.
4. Poor Timing
Rewards need to come within 1-2 seconds of the behaviour. Late rewards can accidentally reinforce the wrong thing.
5. Skipping Foundation Work
Trying to teach advanced tricks before your dog has solid basics leads to frustration. Master sit, stay, and recall before moving on.
